2020.05.16 19:19 CydoniaKnight Movies that were announced but never were actually made

Feeling like a bit of a masochist, so what are some examples of movies that people had announced/said they were working on/etc. but got canceled/postponed indefinitely?
I went on a Tim Minchin kick recently and remembered that Dreamworks cancelled Larrikins a few years ago.
The movie, which had been pushed around the schedule already had culled together an all-star voice cast who were waiting in the wings including Hugh Jackman, Margot Robbie, Naomi Watts, Rose Byrne and Ben Mendelsohn.
Minchin and Chris Miller were supposed to be directing the animal rock ‘n’ roll musical about a desert-dwelling marsupial known as a bilby who has lived under a rock his entire life before he is kicked out by his parents and told to get a life — and does so by going on a road trip with a band in the Australian Outback. Minchin, composer-lyricist of the five-time Tony-winning Matilda The Musical, was composing the music for Larrikins.
We got this close to having a Tim Minchin animated musical movie, which knowing Matilda and Groundhog Day, would've been fantastic.
So, hit me with the near-misses and might-have-beens. Fincher's 20k Leagues Under the Sea? Brad Bird's 1906? GDT's Haunted Mansion with Gosling? GDT's Hobbit? GDT's At the Mountains of Madness? Kubrick's Napoleon?

2018.09.19 08:03 EpicMoy Which actor or actress do you sometimes mix up with a different actor or actress?

For whatever reason, I always get confused who's Nicole Kidman and who's Naomi Watts. They don't even look alike to me and their names don't even sound close to each other. One is Australian and one is English. The only thing they have in common is their blond hair.
I am aware of what movies they were in but I just don't know which one was in which. For example, I know one of them dated or married Tom Cruise and was in Eyes Wide Shut and I know that the other one is currently married to Keith Urban. Sometimes I would ask myself, which one was in that movie about a typhoon with the guy that played Obi Wan (Ewan McGregor) or which one is in that movie with Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) set in the outback. Sometimes I forget that one of them even exist and think that the other was in all those films and married both Tom and Keith.

2018.02.04 13:00 autobuzzfeedbot 37 Underrated Netflix Hidden Gems You Should Already Be Watching

  1. Sing Street (2016): This truly underrated musical follows a teen in Dublin in the '80s as he forms a rock band to impress a girl.
  2. Train to Busan (2016): It’s a Korean film about a zombie virus outbreak, and it's got a huuuuuuuge twist ending. If you're into post-apocalyptic stuff, this one's for you.
  3. A Serious Man (2009): One of the most under-appreciated Coen Brothers films, it stars Michael Stuhlbarg (i.e. the dad from Call Me by Your Name) as a professor who is really struggling and seeks guidance from three rabbis. It's painfully funny and relatable.
  4. What Happened to Monday (2017): It's an epic sci-fi movie about seven genetically identical sisters who live in a world with a strict one-child policy. There's a plot twist at the end that will probably make you cry and second-guess everything.
  5. The Way He Looks (2014): In this Brazilian movie, the protagonist is a blind teenager who searches for independence and tries to balance everything after developing feelings for a new male classmate.
  6. Butter (2011): This movie is just as funny as it is random, following a little girl on her journey to win a butter-sculpting contest in Iowa. The cast is insane, featuring stars like Jennifer Garner, Olivia Wilde, and even Hugh Jackman.
  7. Circle (2015): Several strangers wake up and find themselves arranged in a circle on a high-tech platform. One by one, they will be killed – it can be random, or they can choose who will be executed. Only one person is allowed to survive.
  8. Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things (2015): At just over an hour in length, this can't-miss documentary interviews people who believe things don't bring happiness.
  9. Begin Again (2013): Mark Ruffalo plays a struggling music producer who discovers a new voice (Keira Knightley). This musical rom-com is endearing, star-studded, and a true hidden gem.
  10. Handsome Devil (2016): A coming-of-age movie about two unalike guys in a boarding school who are forced to live together. There's a real warmth to it, and the soundtrack is incredible.
  11. Chelsea Peretti: One of the Greats (2014): This hilarious stand-up special from Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Chelsea Peretti will probably make you pee your pants from laughing so hard. You've been warned.
  12. Moonrise Kingdom (2012): This quirky, coming-of-age Wes Anderson film revolves around two 12-year-olds who fall in love and run away together. Among those searching for the love birds are Bruce Willis, Ed Norton, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, and Frances McDormand. Enough said.
  13. Save the Date (2012): Lizzy Caplan and Alison Brie star as sisters in this romantic comedy, which was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
  14. okja (2017): In the not-to-distant future, Tilda Swinton and Jake Gyllenhaal play bad guys who try to kidnap and execute a little girl's best friend, a super pig that was unknowingly raised for slaughter. This film might change the way you see this world.
  15. The True Cost (2015): This documentary gives a behind-the-scenes look at the "fast fashion" movement. It's honest, bleak, and truly eye-opening.
  16. Little Evil (2017): In this horror-comedy, Adam Scott plays a newly-married guy who thinks his stepson is a demon, and he ends up in a custody battle with Satan. Yup.
  17. The Imitation Game (2014): Nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, this real-life story follows Alan Turing as he tries to crack German intelligence codes for Britain during World War II. It also focuses on Turing's life as a gay man during that time period.
  18. Adore (2013): This drama is truly wild, revolving around two teenage guys who start dating – and ultimately fall in love with – each other's moms. Even better, Robin Wright and Naomi Watts play the two moms.
  19. Schitt's Creek (2015–present): This was by far the most-suggested TV show people wrote about in the comment section. Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy star as the mom and dad in a formerly filthy-rich family who suddenly lose everything. To make matters worse, they have to move into a motel in a town they previously bought as a joke, aka Schitt's Creek.
  20. Dark (2017–present): Children mysteriously go missing in a small German town in the year 2019, and we soon find out that it isn't the first time this has happened. There's a supernatural element to this, so if you loved Stranger Things you should totally give this other Netflix original series a shot.
  21. Chewing Gum (2015–2017): This British sitcom centers around a woman who grew up in a conservative evangelical household, so as an adult she begins to experiment with sex and drugs. It's cringeworthy and awkward and absolutely hilarious.
  22. Toast of London (2012–2015): It's a ridiculous, hilarious, absurdist British comedy. If you love The IT Crowd, you'll love Matt Berry's performance as Steven Toast, a kicked-around Shakespearean actor in London.
  23. Wentworth (2013–present): This Australian drama follows a woman in prison who was charged with the attempted murder of her husband. Think Orange is the New Black, only less direct comedy.
  24. Somebody Feed Phil (2018–present): This Food Network-meets-Anthony Bourdain series follows Phil Rosenthal (the Everybody Loves Raymond creator) as he goes on a culinary exploration through different countries around the world.
  25. The Five (2016–present): It's a murder-mystery series with a serious Broadchurch vibe. The characters are compelling and the twists are plentiful and after the second episode you'll be hooked.
  26. Cable Girls (2017–present): This period drama takes place in Madrid in the 1920s and follows four women who work as telephone operators. The show wouldn't be complete without murder, sex, lies, and several twists.
  27. Freaks and Geeks (1999–2000): Paul Feig and Judd Apatow's short-lived series about being a high school student in the '80s only lasted one season, but it's regarded as one of the best teen TV shows of all time.
  28. Parenthood (2010–2015): I'll keep this one short: If you like This Is Us, you'll love Parenthood.
  29. She's Gotta Have It (2017–present): Spike Lee and Netflix collaborated to bring back his classic 1986 movie with the same name, this time as a TV series. Hell yes.
  30. 3% (2016–present): This dystopian thriller takes place in the future, where the world's population is split between those living in pure poverty and the 3% who live in a true eden. Everyone is given only one chance to be saved and join the 3%.
  31. Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee (2012–present): This on-the-go talk show is hosted by Jerry Seinfeld, where he basically just drives around other famous comedians and drinks coffee for them, all while discussing life, comedy, and the entertainment industry. It's, intriguing, off-the-cuff, and pretty hilarious.
  32. The Get Down (2016–2017): This two-season musical drama takes place in New York City in the '70s. Even better, it was created by Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!) and stars Jaden Smith. Need I say more?
  33. Frontier (2016–present): With equal parts action and drama, Jason Momoa plays a half-Cree, half-Irish fur trapper in 18th-century North America. The show is as beautiful as he is.
  34. One Day at a Time (2017–present): This Latino remake of the classic '70s sitcom follows three generations of a Cuban-American family, including a newly single veteran mom, her two children, and her old-school mother, played by EGOT-winner Rita Moreno.
  35. Chelsea Does (2016–present): This humorous and eye-opening documentary series follows comedian Chelsea Handler on her journey to understand how and why people live and experience certain things, whether that involves visiting former plantations in the South or trying ayahuasca in Peru.
  36. Rita (2012–present): This show takes place in Denmark and follows a foul-mouthed teacher with a ton of baggage; she smokes, drinks, and even has sex in the school bathroom with students' dads.
  37. And Mindhunter (2017–present): This based-on-a-true-story crime drama follows two FBI agents in the 1970s as they interview murderers and try to discovery a new breed of criminals: serial killers.

2017.10.21 21:34 TreeFromAnotherPlace Example #588,673 of the amazing attention to detail on this show: Naomi Watts's accent

Naomi Watts makes a guest appearance in S1E10, playing herself as the actress playing Diane in the movie adaptation of the 'D' story. But did you ever notice how her accent is suddenly different in her final scene of the episode? Up until this point, she was speaking with an American accent - until she gets fired from the movie (and replaced with a ball on a stick), after that she's suddenly speaking with Naomi Watts's real British/Australian mish-mash accent.
Because for the entire duration of the shoot, she was always in character as Diane. Which is exactly the point she is making in that last scene, so her accent suddenly being different serves to perfectly underline what she's saying.

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM - This spin-off of the Harry Potter franchise jumps back in time to explore the wizarding world of 1926 New York, which is being threatened by both mystical acts of destruction and a group of extremist No-Majs (the American term for Muggles, i.e. those unable to use magic). Author Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) arrives in the city as part of a global study of fantastic beasts, but he gets caught up in this conflict when some of the magical creatures in his care are accidentally released.
LOVING - The latest from writer-director Jeff Nichols (Mud), Loving is an exquisitely crafted and deeply moving film about real-life couple Mildred and Richard Loving. Mildred (Ruth Negga), a black woman from Virginia, was just 11 years old when she first met the love of her life, a white man named Richard (Joel Edgerton). Near the end of high school, their friendship turns romantic, and the two decide to quietly wed in Washington, D.C. MOONLIGHT - Moonlight is a tender, breathtaking portrait of a young, gay black man coming of age in 1980s Miami. Told with great ambition and verve, the film unfolds in three vividly imagined chapters, with different actors portraying the protagonist, Chiron, at various points of his life. With his mother (Naomie Harris) battling drug addiction, young Chiron forms a close bond with a compassionate dealer (Mahershala Ali) and his partner (Janelle Monáe). In the following chapters, we see how Chiron's relationships with these figures, as well as his relationship with a close childhood friend, shape who he becomes. The long-awaited sophomore feature from Barry Jenkins (Medicine for Melancholy), Moonlight is an adaptation of Tarell Alvin McCraney's semi-autobiographical play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue.
NOCTURNAL ANIMALS - Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2016 Venice International Film Festival. 2012.12.08 10:39 samuentaga Just watched The Impossible: Here's a review/rant

First of all, the review: This movie was amazing, heart wrenching, and downright tragic (in the best way). I'm not Thai, but I've lived in Thailand most of my life, and I went back to Australia at around the same time the tragic 2004 Boxing Day tsunami actually happened, knowing that I, as a Australian raised in Thailand, am somehow connected to the story more than the others that sat around me watching the news. The film stars Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts, two very capable actors, and this is probably Naomi Watts' best role i've seen her in. She played her role perfectly from the beginning. The script is mostly good, dialogue perfect, but some of the plotting is a bit cliche. They use the old 'pass-by-without-seeing-each-other' tactic quite a bit in the final scenes, and there was a lack of emotional payoff in the game. I know it's a true story, but maybe a different true story from the event could've worked better. The kids, however, are amazing. I forget their names, but the 12, 7 and 5 year olds sell their roles perfectly. Naomi Watts, as i already said, is great. Ewan, however, is a bit of a let down. He feels a bit out of place, and although he puts his all into the film, we don't get as much from him as the other characters. Overall, it's a great drama based on a true story (although the actual family the story is based off is Spanish, not British) and deserves to be watched. I'm expecting Naomi Watts to get a couple of nominations for best actress from this.
Now the rant: I read one review just now, saying it's exploitative tripe, saying it's melodramatic and it takes advantage of the thousands of locals that died just to tell the story of a family of rich whites that survives (money makes you invincible, right?) now i understand why the critics say this: Why not make a story about the locals? the answer, however is obvious: IT WOULDN'T SELL! This film taking the perspective of a white family happened for the same reason that every J-horror film remake was made (the Ring especially): to make the story relevant to the audience (which is us: the white people) Honestly, if you, an american (if you're not an american, just think hypothetically), saw a poster of just a bunch of not-pretty poor Thai people about the same tsunami, would you watch it? You might if you really love movies and/or know someone who was there at the time, but the general public wouldn't go, and even though the point of the film was to tell a tragic tale about a true story, they still want (wait, need) to get their money back. You think those amazing tsunami effects were cheap? So before you dismiss this film as 'a cash in of a tragedy', rethink what you're saying. Do you really wan't to just ignore the currently ONLY film about this event just because it's told from white person perspective? They'll probably make a Thai one eventually, (or any other place that was effected by the event) but this is all you've got, and it's the best representation of a tsunami I've ever seen, yet alone this specific one.
So what do you think about this film? Did you enjoy it? (not the best word, i know) did you think it was bad, or exploitative? If so, please reply. I'd love to see what you think about this film, and others like it.

2011.09.22 19:26 tha_snazzle W8D3 or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Run

10:17AM. Oh no, I overslept. How did I not hear the alarm? Must have something to do with the new fan I put in my room last night. Or the shot of NyQuil I took because I haven't been sleeping well. Shit. I have to be at work by noon because I have to be home by 8 to go to this thing tonight. Better get up. Ugh...these NyQuil mornings...
Put on my shorts, my old T-shirt. No wait, take the shirt off and band-aid my nipples first. What a weird thing to have to do. Now put on the shirt. Start to lace my shoes. Do I have to do this? Yes. There's no other time. It has to be right now.
Headphones in, podcast selected. I'm listening to podcasts on longer runs now. They hold my attention better. Start the running app with the nice Australian lady telling me what to do. 28 minutes today? Ugh I knew that but it sounds so long in my morning fog.
Open the door, DAMN is it muggy. Looks like rain but of course I won't get the welcome reprieve. I will only get the thickness before the rain--the swelter of wet atmosphere condensing on every part of my body, encouraging the sweat within me to come out and play.
Five minute warm-up walk. They get shorter every time, and I usually welcome the beginning of my run but today...I might not be ready when the time comes. I walk through a bad neighborhood on the way to the avenue I run down but I am invisible.
"Your run begins now." Already? To me the running app narrator is a motherly Naomi Watts, and she is beautiful and tender so I run. My pace starts slow. That is okay, I am still running. I am running that much more than everyone I pass who is driving. I am running more than every silhouette in the apartment windows where I see the cold blue flicker of television. I am running more than myself 9 weeks ago: a lazy, selfish, profligate.
Ira Glass talks about this and that. I pay half attention to his nasal voice and half attention to my pace and breathing. This isn't the best episode but it would be distracting to change it or switch to music at this point. My energy has picked up some. I reach the halfway point sooner than I expected and do my awkward mid-run turnaround. I am always glad when there are no cars on the road to witness that.
I'll be done in no time, I think. Naomi tells me I have thirteen minutes left. Hm, that actually doesn't sound too good. Ten would be better. I can do ten. I come to a grade and going up it feels harder than usual. I worry that I'm more bounce-walking than running so I pick up the pace. It's no fun but I get over the hill to the sweet, sweet downward slope. I have to do the same thing in another fifty meters. And then another. I ask myself why, in pancake-flat Florida, I picked the only road in town that has noticeable hills.
I've been running for twenty minutes now and somehow it's getting harder. The air is so thick with humidity it's like running through a neverending cluster of damp towels. The sweat ring on my shirt has been steadily creeping towards my waist and I look down--yep, the sweat has reached the hemline. The shirt is saturated, clinging to me like an X-ray vest and slowing me down even more. At least the band-aids are holding up.
Usually my legs get sore before my breath gives out, but today something switched. My muscles feel great but my lungs--the very furnaces that provide the steam required to push this old engine down the tracks--are upset with me. It hasn't even been twenty-five minutes yet and I begin to wonder if I will make it there, let alone twenty-eight.
So I go directly to stage three of grief: bargaining. Don't stop here, at least get to that oak tree up there before you start walking again. Before I reach the oak tree, Naomi tells me it's been twenty-five minutes. Oh good, I think, as I pass the oak tree. Twenty-five is good enough. I'll just get to the end of the block and stop.
The end of the block comes and I make the turn back towards my house. Oh, I noticed I kept running. Well, I can definitely start walking when I get to the entrance of this apartment building up here.
The apartment entrance comes and I keep running. I'll stop at the end of the next block.
The next block comes and goes.
And the next.
And the next.
Then Naomi tells me it's okay to stop now, the twenty-eight minutes are up. I did it. How did I do it? How did I get here? I hardly believe I am inside the same person I was inside nine weeks ago. But now I'm in the middle of a block, so I decide to stop at the end of it, for consistency's sake. Then the end of the block comes, and then it goes.
And the next.
And the next...
