First, we run an INDEX on the entire table range B2:D7. The first argument to this function is the row_number, for which we pipe in a MATCH function that matches the phrase in cell G2 (' March', in this example) against the cell range B2:B7. We can now rewrite the INDEX formula like this to visualize what's happening: =INDEX(B2:E13,5,3) . INDEX and MATCH is the most popular tool in Excel for performing more advanced lookups. This is because INDEX and MATCH is incredibly flexible – you can do horizontal and vertical lookups, 2-way lookups, left lookups, case-sensitive lookups, and even lookups based on multiple criteria. The MATCH INDEX ‘method’ is a combination of the functions MATCH and INDEX to create a lookup similar to (but better than) VLOOKUP/HLOOKUP. The synergy between the functions are based on that: MATCH searches for a value and returns a _location_; MATCH feeds the location to the INDEX function; Then INDEX transforms this location into a result Use INDEX and MATCH in Excel and impress your boss. Instead of using VLOOKUP, use INDEX and MATCH. To perform advanced lookups, you'll need INDEX and MATCH. Match. The MATCH function returns the position of a value in a given range. In many cases, merging data in Excel can easily be accomplished with a single INDEX-MATCH (or a VLOOKUP). Sometimes, though, it’s time to bring out the big guns — the INDEX-MATCH-MATCH. The most popular way to do a two-way lookup in Excel is by using INDEX MATCH MATCH. This is a variation of the classic INDEX MATCH formula to which you add one more MATCH function in order to get both the row and column numbers: INDEX MATCH MATCH probably won’t be a formula you use often. Most of the time when dealing with databases and data tables, you’ll be using vertical lookups to query results. However, in situations where you absolutely do need to perform a matrix lookup, INDEX MATCH MATCH is the best option you have. ...

2020.09.29 16:10 LChris24 (Spoilers Extended) Tales From the Crypt (of Winterfell)

Happy Tuesday! Let's discuss: The Crypts of Winterfell
For a moment Eddard Stark was filled with a terrible sense of foreboding. This was his place, here in the north. He looked at the stone figures all around them, breathed deep in the chill silence of the crypt. He could feel the eyes of the dead. They were all listening, he knew. And winter was coming. -AGOT, Eddard I
I thought it would be fun as we head into October to discuss the Winterfell Crypts which not only have featured heavily in our story so far, but if the show is to be believed will result in some resurrected Starks.
Some Thoughts/Theories & a List of Characters Entombed in the Winterfell Crypts

The Kings of WinteKings in the North were hard men who ruled hard times:
He led the way between the pillars and Robert followed wordlessly, shivering in the subterranean chill. It was always cold down here. Their footsteps rang off the stones and echoed in the vault overhead as they walked among the dead of House Stark. The Lords of Winterfell watched them pass. Their likenesses were carved into the stones that sealed the tombs. In long rows they sat, blind eyes staring out into eternal darkness, while great stone direwolves curled round their feet. The shifting shadows made the stone figures seem to stir as the living passed by.
By ancient custom an iron longsword had been laid across the lap of each who had been Lord of Winterfell, to keep the vengeful spirits in their crypts. The oldest had long ago rusted away to nothing, leaving only a few red stains where the metal had rested on stone. Ned wondered if that meant those ghosts were free to roam the castle now. He hoped not. The first Lords of Winterfell had been men hard as the land they ruled. In the centuries before the Dragonlords came over the sea, they had sworn allegiance to no man, styling themselves the Kings in the North. -AGOT, Eddard I

List of Dead Starks Entombed

We get information on the dead Starks from three passages:
He looked at the passing faces and the tales came back to him. The maester had told him the stories, and Old Nan had made them come alive. "That one is Jon Stark. When the sea raiders landed in the east, he drove them out and built the castle at White Harbor. His son was Rickard Stark, not my father's father but another Rickard, he took the Neck away from the Marsh King and married his daughter. Theon Stark's the real thin one with the long hair and the skinny beard. They called him the 'Hungry Wolf,' because he was always at war. That's a Brandon, the tall one with the dreamy face, he was Brandon the Shipwright, because he loved the sea. His tomb is empty. He tried to sail west across the Sunset Sea and was never seen again. His son was Brandon the Burner, because he put the torch to all his father's ships in grief. There's Rodrik Stark, who won Bear Island in a wrestling match and gave it to the Mormonts. And that's Torrhen Stark, the King Who Knelt. He was the last King in the North and the first Lord of Winterfell, after he yielded to Aegon the Conqueror. Oh, there, he's Cregan Stark. He fought with Prince Aemon once, and the Dragonknight said he'd never faced a finer swordsman." They were almost at the end now, and Bran felt a sadness creeping over him. "And there's my grandfather, Lord Rickard, who was beheaded by Mad King Aerys. His daughter Lyanna and his son Brandon are in the tombs beside him. Not me, another Brandon, my father's brother. They're not supposed to have statues, that's only for the lords and the kings, but my father loved them so much he had them done." -AGOT, Bran VII
Their footsteps echoed through the cavernous crypts. The shadows behind them swallowed his father as the shadows ahead retreated to unveil other statues; no mere lords, these, but the old Kings in the North. On their brows they wore stone crowns. Torrhen Stark, the King Who Knelt. Edwyn the Spring King. Theon Stark, the Hungry Wolf. Brandon the Burner and Brandon the Shipwright. Jorah and Jonos, Brandon the Bad, Walton the Moon King, Edderion the Bridegroom, Eyron, Benjen the Sweet and Benjen the Bitter, King Edrick Snowbeard. Their faces were stern and strong, and some of them had done terrible things, but they were Starks every one, and Bran knew all their tales. He had never feared the crypts; they were part of his home and who he was, and he had always known that one day he would lie here too.
When the shadows moved, it looked for an instant as if the dead were rising as well. Lyanna and Brandon, Lord Rickard Stark their father, Lord Edwyle his father, Lord Willam and his brother Artos the Implacable, Lord Donnor and Lord Beron and Lord Rodwell, one-eyed Lord Jonnel, Lord Barth and Lord Brandon and Lord Cregan who had fought the Dragonknight. On their stone chairs they sat with stone wolves at their feet. This was where they came when the warmth had seeped out of their bodies; this was the dark hall of the dead, where the living feared to tread. -ACOK, Bran VII
Their footsteps echoed through the vault as they made their way between the rows of pillars. The stone eyes of the dead men seemed to follow them, and the eyes of their stone direwolves as well. The faces stirred faint memories. A few names came back to him, unbidden, whispered in the ghostly voice of Maester Luwin. King Edrick Snowbeard, who had ruled the north for a hundred years. Brandon the Shipwright, who had sailed beyond the sunset. Theon Stark, the Hungry Wolf. My namesake. Lord Beron Stark, who made common cause with Casterly Rock to war against Dagon Greyjoy, Lord of Pyke, in the days when the Seven Kingdoms were ruled in all but name by the bastard sorcerer men called Bloodraven. -ADWD, The Turncloak
Ancient Kings
The crypts are huge and the lower levels are partially collapsed, so while there are more kings/lords than the ones I have listed (Brandon IX, Brandon "Ice Eyes" Stark, etc.), I only wanted to note the ones that have been mentioned so far in the story.
We first have a large list in which the name is only mentioned once (as laying in the crypts):
  • Edwyn "the Spring King" Stark
  • Brandon "the Bad" Stark
  • Walton "the Moon King" Stark
  • Edderion "the Bridegroom" Stark
  • Eyron Stark
  • Jorah Stark
  • Jonos Stark
  • Benjen "the Sweet" Stark
  • Benjen "the Bitter" Stark
We get an unbroken line of statues of Lords from Cregan through Rickard:
  • Brandon/Lyanna and Artos the Implacable are the only non king/lords that are buried in the crypts
  • As I mentioned Im sure plenty of other lords/kings are in the crypts, their statues just have yet to be mentioned
  • I think GRRM has left the possibility open as to whether to use the resurrected dead in Winterfell or not. The missing swords (rusted away, taken by Bran and co. should at least be noted).

Jon's Dreams
Jon has numerous dreams about the Winterfell crypts:
-Jon shook his head. "No one. The castle is always empty." He had never told anyone of the dream, and he did not understand why he was telling Sam now, yet somehow it felt good to talk of it. "Even the ravens are gone from the rookery, and the stables are full of bones. That always scares me. I start to run then, throwing open doors, climbing the tower three steps at a time, screaming for someone, for anyone. And then I find myself in front of the door to the crypts. It's black inside, and I can see the steps spiraling down. Somehow I know I have to go down there, but I don't want to. I'm afraid of what might be waiting for me. The old Kings of Winter are down there, sitting on their thrones with stone wolves at their feet and iron swords across their laps, but it's not them I'm afraid of. I scream that I'm not a Stark, that this isn't my place, but it's no good, I have to go anyway, so I start down, feeling the walls as I descend, with no torch to light the way. It gets darker and darker, until I want to scream." He stopped, frowning, embarrassed. "That's when I always wake." -AGOT, Jon IV
Last night he had dreamt the Winterfell dream again. He was wandering the empty castle, searching for his father, descending into the crypts. Only this time the dream had gone further than before. In the dark he'd heard the scrape of stone on stone. When he turned he saw that the vaults were opening, one after the other. As the dead kings came stumbling from their cold black graves, Jon had woken in pitch-dark, his heart hammering. Even when Ghost leapt up on the bed to nuzzle at his face, he could not shake his deep sense of terror. He dared not go back to sleep. Instead he had climbed the Wall and walked, restless, until he saw the light of the dawn off to the east. It was only a dream. I am a brother of the Night's Watch now, not a frightened boy. -AGOT, Jon VII
He dreamt he was back in Winterfell, limping past the stone kings on their thrones. Their grey granite eyes turned to follow him as he passed, and their grey granite fingers tightened on the hilts of the rusted swords upon their laps. You are no Stark, he could hear them mutter, in heavy granite voices. There is no place for you here. Go away. He walked deeper into the darkness. "Father?" he called. "Bran? Rickon?" No one answered. A chill wind was blowing on his neck. "Uncle?" he called. "Uncle Benjen? Father? Please, Father, help me." Up above he heard drums. They are feasting in the Great Hall, but I am not welcome there. I am no Stark, and this is not my place. His crutch slipped and he fell to his knees. The crypts were growing darker. A light has gone out somewhere. "Ygritte?" he whispered. "Forgive me. Please." But it was only a direwolf, grey and ghastly, spotted with blood, his golden eyes shining sadly through the dark . . .
The cell was dark, the bed hard beneath him. His own bed, he remembered, his own bed in his steward's cell beneath the Old Bear's chambers. By rights it should have brought him sweeter dreams. Even beneath the furs, he was cold. Ghost had shared his cell before the ranging, warming it against the chill of night. And in the wild, Ygritte had slept beside him. Both gone now. He had burned Ygritte himself, as he knew she would have wanted, and Ghost . . . Where are you? Was he dead as well, was that what his dream had meant, the bloody wolf in the crypts? But the wolf in the dream had been grey, not white. Grey, like Bran's wolf. Had the Thenns hunted him down and killed him after Queenscrown? If so, Bran was lost to him for good and all. -ASOS, Jon VIII
"What everyone knows is that Ser Alliser is a knight from a noble line, and trueborn, while I'm the bastard who killed Qhorin Halfhand and bedded with a spearwife. The warg, I've heard them call me. How can I be a warg without a wolf, I ask you?" His mouth twisted. "I don't even dream of Ghost anymore. All my dreams are of the crypts, of the stone kings on their thrones. Sometimes I hear Robb's voice, and my father's, as if they were at a feast. But there's a wall between us, and I know that no place has been set for me."
The living have no place at the feasts of the dead. It tore the heart from Sam to hold his silence then. Bran's not dead, Jon, he wanted to stay. He's with friends, and they're going north on a giant elk to find a three-eyed crow in the depths of the haunted forest. It sounded so mad that there were times Sam Tarly thought he must have dreamt it all, conjured it whole from fever and fear and hunger . . . but he would have blurted it out anyway, if he had not given his word. -ASOS, Samwell IV
Ned's Dream
He was walking through the crypts beneath Winterfell, as he had walked a thousand times before. The Kings of Winter watched him pass with eyes of ice, and the direwolves at their feet turned their great stone heads and snarled. Last of all, he came to the tomb where his father slept, with Brandon and Lyanna beside him. "Promise me, Ned," Lyanna's statue whispered. She wore a garland of pale blue roses, and her eyes wept blood. -AGOT, Eddard XIII
The Six Stark Children
One of my favorite passages. Everyone is together and so happy.
Fear cuts deeper than swords, the quiet voice inside her whispered. Suddenly Arya remembered the crypts at Winterfell. They were a lot scarier than this place, she told herself. She'd been just a little girl the first time she saw them. Her brother Robb had taken them down, her and Sansa and baby Bran, who'd been no bigger than Rickon was now. They'd only had one candle between them, and Bran's eyes had gotten as big as saucers as he stared at the stone faces of the Kings of Winter, with their wolves at their feet and their iron swords across their laps.
Robb took them all the way down to the end, past Grandfather and Brandon and Lyanna, to show them their own tombs. Sansa kept looking at the stubby little candle, anxious that it might go out. Old Nan had told her there were spiders down here, and rats as big as dogs. Robb smiled when she said that. "There are worse things than spiders and rats," he whispered. "This is where the dead walk." That was when they heard the sound, low and deep and shivery. Baby Bran had clutched at Arya's hand.
When the spirit stepped out of the open tomb, pale white and moaning for blood, Sansa ran shrieking for the stairs, and Bran wrapped himself around Robb's leg, sobbing. Arya stood her ground and gave the spirit a punch. It was only Jon, covered with flour. "You stupid," she told him, "you scared the baby," but Jon and Robb just laughed and laughed, and pretty soon Bran and Arya were laughing too. -AGOT, Arya IV
Bran/Rickon's dream about Ned/Hodor's Fear
The mention of dreams reminded him. "I dreamed about the crow again last night. The one with three eyes. He flew into my bedchamber and told me to come with him, so I did. We went down to the crypts. Father was there, and we talked. He was sad."
"And why was that?" Luwin peered through his tube.
"It was something to do about Jon, I think. The dream had been deeply disturbing, more so than any of the other crow dreams. "Hodor won't go down into the crypts."
The maester had only been half listening, Bran could tell. He lifted his eye from the tube, blinking. "Hodor won't …?"
"Go down into the crypts. When I woke, I told him to take me down, to see if Father was truly there. At first he didn't know what I was saying, but I got him to the steps by telling him to go here and go there, only then he wouldn't go down. He just stood on the top step and said 'Hodor,' like he was scared of the dark, but I had a torch. It made me so mad I almost gave him a swat in the head, like Old Nan is always doing." He saw the way the maester was frowning and hurriedly added, "I didn't, though."
"In the dream I flew down with the crow, but I can't do that when I'm awake," Bran explained.
"Why would you want to go down to the crypts?"
"I told you. To look for Father."
The maester tugged at the chain around his neck, as he often did when he was uncomfortable. "Bran, sweet child, one day Lord Eddard will sit below in stone, beside his father and his father's father and all the Starks back to the old Kings in the North … but that will not be for many years, gods be good. Your father is a prisoner of the queen in King's Landing. You will not find him in the crypts."
"He was there last night. I talked to him."-AGOT, Bran VII
"Shaggy," a small voice called. When Bran looked up, his little brother was standing in the mouth of Father's tomb. With one final snap at Summer's face, Shaggydog broke off and bounded to Rickon's side. "You let my father be," Rickon warned Luwin. "You let him be."
"Rickon," Bran said softly. "Father's not here.""In your dream …?"
Rickon nodded. "You leave him. You leave him be. He's coming home now, like he promised. He's coming home."
Bran had never seen Maester Luwin look so uncertain before. -AGOT, Bran VII
After rereading both AGOT and ACOK I was wondering about one question: Why was Hodor not afraid of the crypts under Winterfell at the end of ACOK? In AGOT Hodor was very afraid of the crypts, he wouldn't take Bran down there, but in ACOK he stayed with Bran and Rickon in the crypt for quite a while, how did he stay there if he was so afraid?
GRRM: Hodor was only afraid of the crypts =at that specific time = Not before and not after." -SSM, Hodor and the Crypts: 3 January 1999
Which should be noted that Hallis Mollen has Ned's bones but Lady Dustin doesn't want to allow them to come to rest.
Bran sees some of the old kings in a vision
After that the glimpses came faster and faster, till Bran was feeling lost and dizzy. He saw no more of his father, nor the girl who looked like Arya, but a woman heavy with child emerged naked and dripping from the black pool, knelt before the tree, and begged the old gods for a son who would avenge her. Then there came a brown-haired girl slender as a spear who stood on the tips of her toes to kiss the lips of a young knight as tall as Hodor. A dark-eyed youth, pale and fierce, sliced three branches off the weirwood and shaped them into arrows. The tree itself was shrinking, growing smaller with each vision, whilst the lesser trees dwindled into saplings and vanished, only to be replaced by other trees that would dwindle and vanish in their turn. And now the lords Bran glimpsed were tall and hard, stern men in fur and chain mail. Some wore faces he remembered from the statues in the crypts, but they were gone before he could put a name to them. -ADWD, Bran III
Other thoughts
  • Vermax is "rumored" to have left a clutch of eggs at Winterfell which coupled with the "winged snake" summer sees leads to theories of a potential dragon in the north
  • Bran gets mad when Rickon shows the Freys the crypts
  • Bran/Meera/Hodor take 3 swords (Rickard/Brandon and an older sword)
  • In addition to the spearwives, Barbrey Dustin is another character that wants Theon to show her the crypts
  • Although it is pretty unlikely, the possibility exists that the North was ruled by a woman at some point
TLDR: Just a list of characters entombed in the Winterfell crypt, as well as some thoughts and theories on the crypts, dreams about the crypt, etc.

"If the president thinks his best case is made in urine he can have at it." - The Biden campaign response to Trump's demands for a pre-debate drug test

Tax Against The Wall

President Trump’s elusive financial records have finally emerged, and, what do you know, they paint a clear picture of someone who absolutely should not be president.
The biggest takeaway is that Trump isn’t just less wealthy than he claims—he is up to his $70,000 haircut in debt, which makes his presidency a serious national-security threat.
Donald Trump ran for president in 2016 to boost his flagging marketability, has used the office to support his failing businesses, and is now prepared to steal an election to avoid accountability for the mountain of debt he can’t afford to pay. Trump was terrified of voters finding out that he is, above all, pathetic. We can work with that.

Look No Further Than The Crooked Media

You’ve all been making calls and texts and working your asses off to win this election, and Crooked wanted to make something fun to commemorate the work you’ve done in this moment. Check out our brand new Vote Save America Action Calendar! It’s like an advent calendar, but for the election, and instead of chocolate, there are stickers. As always, a portion of every order in the Crooked store goes to VoteRiders. Get yours now at

Under The Radar

The Trump administration has spent more than $300 million on an ad blitz to “defeat despair” about the coronavirus ahead of the election. The campaign will reportedly feature administration officials and celebrities (well, Dennis Quaid) discussing the pandemic and the administration’s response. It was organized by former Health and Human Services spokesman Michael Caputo, who’s now on medical leave, and who claimed in a Facebook video that the campaign was “demanded of me by the president of the United States. Personally.” Caputo’s team abruptly commandeered $300 million that Congress had appropriated for the CDC—literally weakening the pandemic response to pay for campaign ads falsely assuring voters that the response is going great. House Democrats have launched an investigation, but haven’t yet been able to halt the contract.

What Else?

President Trump formally nominated Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court on Saturday, and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham has set a timeline to have the committee approve her on October 22. Several Senate Democrats have pledged not to meet with Barrett, and several Republicans have absurdly/falsely/slanderously accused them of hating Catholics.
The first presidential debate will take place in Cleveland, OH, on Tuesday night, sans any fact-checking from moderator Chris Wallace. Joe Biden has been preparing so diligently that journalists are whining that he won’t talk to them, while Trump has been golfing, refusing to practice, and demanding that Biden pee in a cup. Be Smarter

Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign targeted a list of millions of Black voters as part of an extensive effort to deter them from voting, according to a data leak obtained by the British news network Channel 4. A database used by Trump’s digital campaign team separated files on nearly 200 million American voters into eight categories. One category, “Deterrence,” was assigned to 3.5 million Black voters; Black Americans were disproportionately marked “Deterrence” in key swing states, and people of color made up 54 percent of that category overall. Combine that racially targeted deterrence with the fact that the Trump campaign and the RNC have been building a vast election-disputing legal team for the past year, and you’ve got a pretty good picture of how hard Republicans are working to convince Democratic voters that their votes don’t matter. Because, of course, they do.

Innocent people murdered at the hands of police. A broken unemployment system in Florida. Crowded elections in Wisconsin during a global pandemic. Rampant political corruption in the state of Georgia.
None of these things had to happen. A new podcast, Made to Fail, connects the dots between these government failures and pulls back the curtain on the conservative policies that time and time again have failed millions of people across the country.

Previous update Index
Xioden was sitting on the throne when the palace guards announced the presence of the two lords whose attention he had been waiting for. After the incident with their retainers the day before, he had sent a messenger to get them back to the throne room. As far as he was concerned, he was ready to cut off the head of the problem once and for all.
The room was already filled with some of the men Kattus chose to guard him, some palace guards, the remaining council including Unora who he had been doing what he had asked her to do and the guards that were part of their family house. There was to be a reckoning and everyone in the room felt it.
The throne wasn’t as comfortable as it was anymore. If anything, it began to hurt to sit it. Almost like the chair itself was a magnet for trouble. Still, he couldn’t push down the anxiety and odd excitement at facing the traitors. He could feel impatience clawing at him and he barely kept himself some smiling.
Once they were dealt with, he could focus on the war properly and win like they had been supposed to from the beginning. And that, that was something he was looking forward to. The hope of peace on the horizon.
Sitting in a newly constructed chair next to his, was Sera. He planned to announce her as his queen once the war was finished. And as if to match the colours of his house, she was dressed in a dark grey gown with a gold shawl resting around her shoulders. Gold serpent-like earrings hung from her ears, matching the necklace he had given her the night before.
Sera gave him a small smile and he smiled back at her before turning his attention towards the door of the throne room. In a few moments, Lord Thomas Sengh and Lord Vyas Janaya were going to walk through those doors and answer for their crimes. He wished Kattus was present but he knew his friend was still hunting the assassins down.
Nonetheless, in a few moments, he was going to put an end to the thorn in his side. And he couldn’t wait for it to happen.
She felt it as soon as they crossed the figurative line she had drawn in her mind. It was all she had been waiting for but her mind raced with worry as Kana felt the weak link to the shadowspawn. She hoped for a stronger pull so that she could summon them. And the only way she could strengthen the bond was through spilling blood.
Still, if they continued the way they were going, she hoped the bond grew stronger. Lord Timon looked at her from the horse he was on, catching her eyes. She shook her head and bit her lips in response and the man sighed aloud which made her eyes grow wider.
He shrugged and she frowned at him before casting a sweeping gaze around to see if any of their captors had noticed anything but they seemed oblivious to them as if they had stopped mattering in the grand scheme of things.
Nonetheless, she couldn’t help but feel anxious. Her plans rested on crossing into the radius at which she could call on her charges. She wasn’t like some of the other lords who had magical ability or items. All she had was a tattoo that acted as a calling mechanism to the shadowspawn. Something she had spent years hunting down before becoming the head of her house.
It was only luck that allowed her to find their den and bargain with them for the marking before she got recalled back home on account of the former head, her father, passing away in his sleep. And just like that, she went from being free to being shackled.
Her eyes shifted up to the sky and she frowned. The glare of the sun was beginning to vanish behind a massive cloud moving in from the west of the travelling army. Her frown deepened when she noticed how fast the cloud seemed to be moving. Trailing the cloud with her eyes, she followed it to the horizon and her confusion turned into immediate concern.
Dust clouds on the horizon? That is… That makes no sense.
“Erm… Excuse me but something is happening to our west,” she said, loud enough to catch the attention of the Han General.
The general glanced towards the mentioned direction before ordering his men to stop. Kana watched as the man stared into the distance for a few more minutes before barking quick orders in their native tongue. At once, the army shifted into formation to face the approaching dust cloud, with some of the men dropping from their horses and drawing their swords out.
The men carrying her and Lord Timon automatically moved to the back of the line, but with a clear view of what was ahead of them. Lord Timon’s laid back face had been replaced with a look that she hadn’t seen before. The look of experience. He glanced once at her and she understood.
Whatever was about to hit them was going to bed bad but it was also going to be their way out.
One way or the other.
Kattus made sure he was dressed in the colours of the king before making his way to his current point of interest. Behind him was a squad of twenty soldiers, all dressed and ready to strike at a moment’s notice. He was hoping the confrontation wouldn’t come to that but with everything that had happened up until that point, anything could happen.
Still, he couldn’t help but continually check his memory for how he could have missed the signs. He went over every conversation, every sighting, every instance in which the perpetrator was present and he found… nothing.
Which made it all the more infuriating.
The bane of the king’s existence was right under their collective noses and no one sniffed him out. And for someone acting as the hand of the king, it irked him that such a thing could occur under his watchful gaze.
Either way, it’s better now than later, he thought regretfully to himself.
As the party made their way down from Diamond Fields, he found himself absentmindedly touching his coat, just above where the letter from Xioden was. And by letter, it was just a quick note informing him of what was to happen and requesting his presence. He had read it and given the messenger a quick reply back.
“I’ve found another rat. You’ll see them soon with the traitors.”
The only problem was that he hadn’t been able to tell him who the ‘rat’ was. Not yet, at least. Not until he looked into the eyes of the accused and saw the truth for himself. He needed that for himself at the very least.
He did his best to not ride fast. Instead, the whole party sauntered through the districts which watchful eyes. Kattus kept his eyes ahead of him, focusing only on the destination and nothing else. He wanted to catch his prey by surprise. He wanted to help his friend end it all in one swift stroke.
Still, his grip on the reins of his horse was tight and he found himself unable to relax. A heavy accusation was resting on the blade he recovered from the Nafri assassins and he hoped he wasn’t about to ruin a fostering friendship between friends but he had to know. He had to be certain.
It wasn’t until they pulled up in front of the house that he finally forced himself to let go of the reins even as he climbed off his horse. Outside the ornately designed house, one of the maidservants running around with a basket of laundry gave him a confusing look and he plastered a fake smile on his lips before speaking.
“Please tell the head of your house that I would love to speak with him,” Kattus said smoothly.
The woman eyed him warily before dipping into a courtesy the moment she saw the insignia of the Xioden’s house on his lapel. Her courtesy deepened and she ran into the house at once, the door slamming behind her.
Slowly, Kattus took a breath and tried to relax, one hand on the hilt of his sword and the other behind his back.
After a few moments, the door opened and the head of the house peered from behind the door, with a lazy look on their face.
“Kattus… or is it Lord Kattus now?” the head asked with a small smile.
Kattus stared into his eyes without replying. Instead, he slowly moved away his cloak to reveal the blade sheathed in his belt. The pair of eyes staring at his flickered to the blade, widened for the briefest of moments before locking back with his, the smile still on their face.
But it was late. Kattus had seen all he needed to see.
The head of House Sengh couldn’t help but feel like he had made a mistake in not eliminating dissent a bit more harshly. When he was much younger, taking part in skirmishes and the likes, eliminating dissent had been a speciality of his. So much so, it even enabled him to take over as the head of his house.
Not that anyone knew either, except for the man riding next to him at a breakneck pace. He glanced at Lord Vyas and bit his lip. From the moment the man had found out about his particular ‘habit’, he had done all he could to play by the metaphorical book. Dissent was still shut down but it was done without any effort from him at all.
After all, plausible deniability was always a good thing to have. Besides, he had been looking for ways to either incriminate the old man or be rid of him as well. The chances for either of the options just hadn’t presented themselves yet.
But then again…
He pushed the idea from his mind before it formed. Lord Vyas was far too smart to be placed in a trap as basic as that. Nonetheless, he knew he had to find a way to get rid of the man. General Katsu’s disobedience would usually have been snuffed out and blamed on the Nafri or the Ireshans but he felt as though his hands were tied.
And now, the good general was missing from the battle and probably already blabbing away nonsense to the idiot king on the throne. An idiot king with a mysterious ability. An idiot king about to die from his hubris.
After all, what he had acquired was sufficient enough to end life in an instant of sound and fire.
Mysterious power be damned.
“We need to stop at my house for a moment, Vyas,” he called out, glancing once more at the man who only nodded at him with a smile.
Thomas returned his gaze ahead of him and gritted his teeth. The Golden city was in view. They were almost at their reckoning.

2020.09.29 13:25 blackjack30000 Reddit Consensus Positional Rankings [Week 4] (Voting Post)

For those that have never seen these posts before, its a pretty simple concept. 1. Each week I'll create a post on Tuesday morning which will link to 4 voting polls, 1 for each of the following positions QB,RB,WR,TE. 2. Each poll will consist of a list of players at that specific position (18-20 for QB & TE polls) and (40-50 for RB & WR polls). 3. The poll will automatically generate a random match-up between 2 of the players from that position, and ask you simply "Who will perform better in PPR this week?". 4. All you have to do is choose who you personally think will perform better, ie "Score More Fantasy Points". 5. The Polls are never ending and will continue to generate random 1vs1 match-ups until you eventually exit out.
To Contribute toward this effort all I ask is that you spend a few minutes to open up each of the following polls and just vote on a handful of generated match-ups, helping create a more true consensus of /fantasyfootball
RB POLL Click Here
WR POLL Click Here
QB POLL Click Here
TE POLL Click Here
The idea is to gather as many users from this sub as possible all contributing toward the poll by answering a few "match-ups" for each positional poll to gain a consensus rankings that will be posted each Thursday. The ranks allow people that are constantly asking "start/sit" questions between two players at the same position to garner the consensus opinion (in ranking form) of the entire sub, vs having maybe 1 to 2 people if that answer their roster decision on the daily index posts. I also will have them compared to the Fantasy Pros Experts' Consensus Ranks when I post the results on Thursdays allowing for the sub to see where we might be high or low in comparison on certain players.

2020.09.29 13:09 orilicious Question regarding kibana query language

I am new to the world of elastic stack.
The following query does work in "Discover" but not in "Maps".
log.file.path : /valog/auth.log and message : *invalid*
However if I just enter the following in maps I do get results.
log.file.path : /valog/auth.log and message : *
The logs get collected on server A with filebeat:
filebeat.inputs: - type: log enabled: true paths: - /valog/auth.log filebeat.config.modules: path: ${path.config}/modules.d/*.yml reload.enabled: false setup.template.settings: index.number_of_shards: 1 setup.kibana: output.logstash: hosts: ["server-b:5044"] processors: - add_host_metadata: when.not.contains.tags: forwarded - add_cloud_metadata: ~ - add_docker_metadata: ~ - add_kubernetes_metadata: ~
The Logstash Pipeline on server-b looks like this:
input { beats { port => "5044" } } filter { if [document_type] == "syslog" { grok { match => { "message" => "%{SYSLOGTIMESTAMP:system.auth.timestamp} %{SYSLOGHOST:system.auth.hostname} sshd(?:\\[%{}\\])?: %{DATA:system.auth.ssh.event} %{DATA:system.auth.ssh.method} for (invalid user )?%{DATA:system.auth.user} from %{IPORHOST:system.auth.ip} port %{NUMBER:system.auth.port} ssh2(: %{GREEDYDATA:system.auth.ssh.signature})?"} } } } output { elasticsearch { hosts => [ "localhost:9200" ] } }
As I am new to Elasticsearch the problem most likely resides in my lack of understanding how the kibana query language does work. Do you maybe spot some obvious issue with my query and why it works on "Discover" and not on "Maps"?
Kind regards,

2020.09.29 12:51 gintokigriffiths G2 vs Index vs Q2
Just incase people missed it. A lot of us have been debating and a lot of Oculus fans were speculating the Q2 would come close to the G2 visuals.
From the video above, its pretty clear the G2 is better at everything than the Q2 with the Index only having the edge in vertical FOV, horizontal FOV and refresh rate.
The Index beats the Q2 in most use-cases (but the margins are very small) apart from SDE, and trades blows in some games re: sharpness (I think the Q2 looks a bit better in Assetto but worse in others, sadly the poor colours don't help).
SDE: G2 > Q2 > Index
Sharpness: G2 > Index >/= Q2 (I thought Index looked better in most use cases except Assetto Corsa)
Compression: G2=Index >>> Q2 (very obvious in the snellen test)
Black levels G2 > Index >>>Q2 (as evidenced by the DCS test, the sky on the Q2 is very very grey and lets remember neither the G2 or Index have perfect blacks to begin with
Colours: G2 > Index >>>Q2
Vertical FOV: Index>>>G2 >Q2
Horizontal FOV: Index >>G2 >Q2
Refresh rate and motion: Index >>> G2 >>>>>>Q2 (until we get the 90hz update which has been confirmed to sacrifice further graphical fidelity)
So overall, I'd say its some interesting findings which were all in line with what I personally predicted. I don't want to toot my own horn too much. I've owned the Rift S, Quest, Index so it was fairly easy for me to speculate and come to clear conclusions unlike the fanboys who have set up camp in each different hardware developers dungeon.
Whats sad is this that is over the link cable, so the PCVR wireless virtual desktop solutions are likely EVEN worse. Still for the money, its good to see the Q2 is holding its own against far more expensive headsets, albiet the fact its obviously wasting some of its panel by not being able to fully take advantage of it. More dissapointing for the Q2 is Oculus continuously using poor contrast, poor black level LCD panels whilst Valve and HP are using far more superior options.
On the G2 front, it looks like an upgrade in nearly everything. Its clarity now has to become a benchmark for what we need in VR from the PC side of things.
The Q2 is also a benchmark for what we expect in portable VR, alas with no real competition.
Overall, I give the win clearly to the G2 but its amazing that nearly 18 months after the Index's release, it is still holding its own with the newer headsets. I guess in the VR market, it is kind of true that buy cheap, buy twice. Similarly the Q2 for the money is absolutely great, considering it gives visuals around a Valve Index, albiet with far worse colours, refresh rate, last generation controllers, compression artifacts BUT it does have the option of untethered portable VR for smaller games (sadly this comes with the poorer visuals). Its also still clearly the best adult VR entertainment device as it doesn't have a cable so you can take it to bed. *logs onto amazon and orders one*
My biggest take home message for myself is that HP have set a new standard not just for sharpness and clarity but for what we should come to expect from LCD panels on VR headsets. The colours simply look gorgeous. Valve need to take note, and obviously Oculus have a lot of homework to do if they want to match either the Index or G2 colours.
Whats very obvious is you are getting excellent value, no matter which headset you've gone with. If you bought an Index 18 months ago, you still have a top-tier VR headset which goes toe to toe and beats the competition in multiple parameters. If you buy a Q2, you're getting fantastic value on a versatile headset which can be portable and the G2 is the next evolution in VR visual fidelity with the best in class audio system in situ.

2020.09.29 11:45 pistolhamster Can I build a dynamic named range on formulas?

I want to create a dynamic named range of 3x2 cells that should be updated as the month changes. This is the table I look
+ A B C D E F
1 Jun-20 Jul-20 Aug-20 Sep-20 Oct-20 Nov-20
2 2 2 1 1 0 0
My named range is called Progress and should include the 3 cells that correspond with current month and the preceding two months. So I figured I should use INDEX to build that range and OFFSET a range 2 rows high and 3 cols wide, but with a rolling, not fixed beginning). The end of the name range should be the first cell in row A where MATCH(TODAY();B1:BF) is true. The start of the range should be the cell that are offset -2, so for this month it would be B1:D1 But it seems I cant have a rolling start, the reference, or can I? From the start of october, this should be C1:E1. What I want is to average the values in the 2nd row but only from the range of 3.
I found a StackExchange post that describes it with better words perhaps.

2020.09.29 05:50 Verastahl Don't play the game called "Sack of Knives".

It knows what you hate. And it hates what you love.
I originally heard about “Sack of Knives” in one of my medieval literature texts—the class had sounded interesting out of my options that quarter, but two weeks in I was already wishing I’d taken another round of poetry or creative writing. Part of it was the professor, who was chronically dry and boring as he gave a canned lecture he’d obviously regurgitated for the last twenty years. But most of it was the language itself. It was so archaic and hard to read, and I already knew I sucked at foreign language. Some of the books were “modernized”, but most were just littered with footnotes in tiny block paragraphs longer than the text they were explaining. And of course, when I finally saw something that sounded cool, there were no notes to be found.
It was in the middle of a story fragment about a village that fell under a curse of some kind. People were going crazy maybe? Or their cows were all dying. Fuck if I know. The accompanying woodcut made it look bad though. Still, it was kind of boring and dumb, and I was about to give up when a phrase caught my eye. If I wasn’t wrong, it read as “Sack of Knives”.
Like I said, there was no footnote, and when I went to the index, the term wasn’t listed. I looked on the internet, but there was nothing about it there either. My interest was already waning, but then an idea occurred to me.
The professor of the class was always telling people to ask if we had any questions, be it after class or during his student office hours. No way I was doing that, but maybe if I fired off a quick email asking about it he would think I gave a shit about his stupid class. I wasn’t a suck-up, but I didn’t mind a little padding in case I tanked on an essay at some point. So I looked up his faculty email and asked him what the term meant before putting away my books and heading out to Jeff’s party.
I literally didn’t think about it again that night. The party itself kind of sucked—it was one of those deals where there were too many people for it to be fun so my little social circle wound up just hanging out together even though it was in my friends Jeff and Madison’s house. They were both grad students, and Jeff was in a pissy mood about his thesis getting shot down. This led to me and the others of our group taking turns bitching about people that were being assholes—bosses that were unfair, boyfriends and girlfriends that were unfaithful or controlling, parents and siblings that didn’t understand our individual and collective plights. We were all drunk and only half-serious as we took turns trying to melodramatically one-up each other’s woes, and by the end of the night, we were all so exhausted from laughing so much that I wound up falling asleep on their floor. When I got back to my dorm room the next morning, I saw I had an email.
Greetings, Mr. Holden!
So glad to see you taking an interest in the peculiarities of our medieval friends from the distant past! The phrase you referenced is actually quite interesting! It refers to an obscure pranking custom that was common in parts of Europe for a time. It went as follows:
A group of friends or like-minded ne’er-do-wells would gather together and put names or (given the extremely low-rates of literacy) other identifying marks or objects in a sack or satchel. Either way, the idea was that you were identifying a target for the prank—usually an enemy. Once everyone had put a person in the sack, you all drew one back out. Your own excluded, of course.
I say ‘of course’ because the purpose of the sack of knives was to harass or even hurt someone you hated without it being tied to you personally. These were typically small communities where most everyone knew each other, and the risk of being seen and recognized while journeying to or from breaking someone’s fence or poisoning their feed was significantly higher than it would be today. If someone saw an enemy lurking around their property and suddenly their cow got out or their chickens died…well, it would immediately be suspicious. The sack of knives provided a measure of protection from such scrutiny, and generally it was limited to small pranks that wouldn’t raise too much ire, though there were always exceptions.
Once the prankster finished some act against their target, they would go back to the sack (usually hidden in a place everyone in the game knew) and put a stick inside with the name or identifier tied to it. This symbolized the “knife” they used to “kill” their friend’s enemy. The game wasn’t over until all the sticks and artifacts were in the sack. I believe there were variations of the rules over the years, but generally no “winner” was ever specified. I suppose their indirect revenge against those they hated was reward enough.
I thought about responding back, but decided against it. It was cool of him to respond so quick, but there was a difference between getting some brownie points and becoming pen pals with a Lit super nerd. Laughing at the idea, I closed my laptop and got ready for work.
It was a week later when I mentioned the Sack of Knives to Jeff and Madison over dinner. I’d brought it up as a funny story, but the more I described the email, the more interested they became. Before I knew it, they’d called up Paul and Alison (two of our other friends who, based on the earlier party conversation, had clear axes to grind with someone). They brought along their friend Marty who had just been fired from an internship for smoking weed in the parking lot. I tried to put the brakes on before people came over and we got into some weird party game, but Madison wasn’t hearing it. She said it was the best idea she’d heard in fucking months. That it sounded cool, fun, and very satisfying. But the key, she noted, was having enough participation.
Winking at me, she turned and smirked at Jeff. “It’s like that Hitchcock movie, right? Criss-cross, motherfucker.”
Three days later, I was carving the words “fucking whore” into the hood of a stranger’s car.
We’d used a knock-off purse and index cards, but I supposed it worked well enough. I’d pulled Alison’s former best-friend, who had apparently slept with Alison’s high school boyfriend. I wanted to ask if Paul (Alison’s current boyfriend) was okay with her still being so hung up on that past relationship, but I felt like it wouldn’t go over well, so I left it alone. Instead, I dutifully folded up my note and tucked it in my pocket, planning on waiting til later to worry if I was going to go through with a prank or not.
But letting go of the thought wasn’t so easy. From the time I got the name and address, I was preoccupied with doing something to the woman. It’s not like I’m a mean-spirited guy or anything, but it was just…dumb as it sounds, it felt like I’d made a promise I had to keep.
I went back to Jeff’s house after I was done and found the purse hanging in the toolshed. Below it, there were three butter knives with rubberbands around them. Cute. I guessed the other three had already filled the sack, and when I put my own in, I saw I was right. I wondered who had gotten my own special little request, and what they’d done.
I found out soon enough.
“Jeff…J-Jeff’s dead.”
I squeezed the phone tighter as the ground seemed to sway under me. “What? What do you mean?”
Madison’s voice was high and brittle when she spoke again. “I mean he’s fucking dead. He had your guy…Calvin Egger was your guy, right?”
I slumped down onto the couch, barely able to breathe. “Yeah. Yeah, he was my guy. Just this junkie asshole I roomed with as a freshman. He bailed first quarter, stole my laptop. I could never prove it, but I knew it was him. And he’s a townie, so I still see the fucker around some times…” I blinked, coming back to the conversation. “But how…how is Jeff dead?”
“He apparently tried to run that guy off the road. Well, he did run him off he road. The Calvin guy got fucked up…they say they’re lifeflighting him somewhere. But Jeff went off the road too. He hit a tree…” The last word trailed off into a low moan. I didn’t know what to say. Jeff would never do anything like that. There wasn’t a mean or crazy bone in his body. It didn’t make any…
The phone clicked and went dead. I tried calling her back, but there was no answer. Turns out, there was a good reason for that.
She had shot herself in the head.
In the past five days, two of the other three people have turned up dead as well. One by suicide and the other was shot while he was trying to burn down a hardware store. As for Paul? Well, the police are still looking for him in connection with an aggravated assault where he allegedly broke an old man’s legs with a metal softball bat.
And me? I’m currently a “person of interest” in a rape case. Not because I have any connection to the victim whatsoever or because the woman has been able to give a clear description of anyone, but because my car was seen in the neighborhood the night it happened and a man matching my description was seen by a couple walking their dog. The man was apparently carving the words “fucking bitch” into the victim’s car. I’m not superstitious, but I’m not stupid either. This wasn’t all a coincidence, and the thing that connected it all was that stupid fucking game. A game I’d learned about from my professor.
So I emailed him repeatedly, but I got no response. After two days of waiting, I called his office and left a voice mail. To my surprise, I got a call back that afternoon.
“Mr. Browning?”
“Um, yeah. This Professor Miller?”
“It is, yes. I got your voice mail. You sounded very upset, but I couldn’t follow what you were talking about. You mentioned something in the reading?”
I sucked in a breath and tried to keep my voice calm. “Yes, like I told you before. It was in the coursework last month. The story about the cursed village. The thing that talked about the sack of knives game?”
There was a long pause, and I could hear the flutter of pages as he spoke again. “I…I’m not sure what you’re talking about. I know the story you’re referencing, but…just a moment. Ah yes. I think I found the line. Seax of knaves, right?”
“Um, if you say so. You called it sack of knives in the email just like I did. But you have to know more than you…”
I frowned. Was he fucking drunk or something? I didn’t have time for this. If he wouldn’t give me straight answers, he could talk to the fucking cops about it. “Yeah, the email you sent me when I asked about it.”
Another pause. “Mr. Browning, I haven’t sent you an email. I don’t use email at all, if I’m honest. Bit of a Luddite, I know, but old dogs and all that. The department secretary will print out critical missives from my account, but I haven’t read anything from you or any other students in…well, probably better than a year.” The man went on hesitantly. “This is part of what I wanted to address. You seemed in both the voicemail and this conversation to be under the impression that we’ve talked before, but I can assure you we haven’t—not outside of the times I might have called on you in class. As for this phrase…well, it is interesting, but given your apparent upset, it’s certainly not a topic you should be focused on at the moment. Perhaps you should talk to someone if you’re feeling very anxious or confused.”
I stood up and began pacing. “That’s bullshit. I have the email. I have proof.”
“Son, I don’t doubt you do, but I can tell you it wasn’t from me. Maybe you got me mixed up with someone else, or maybe my account got…tricked? Hacked? I don’t know.”
I wanted to scream at him, but I wasn’t sure he was lying. Wasn’t it possible someone else had gotten into his account or duped his address somehow? But why? And what did it have to do with the stupid sack of knives game?
“I really should be going.”
“No! Please, professor. Just…I’ll stay calm. Just tell me what you know about the sack of knives game.”
I could hear him puff out a long breath on the other end. “Very well, but if you get upset again, I’m going to let you go.”
“Okay, deal.”
“Okay. As I said, it’s not ‘sack of knives’. It’s ‘seax of knaves’. Seax was an Old English name for a kind of knife, which makes your mistake rather humorous, I suppose. They were single-edged, fixed-blade tools that were sometimes used as weapons in a pinch, particularly among the Saxons, whose name comes from that very same word. As for ‘knave’, that’s an old word for a trickster or a scoundrel. Sometimes a thief or something worse.”
“Worse like what? What does it mean in the book? In that village?”
“I…I don’t know that I feel comfortable delving into old superstitions with a man that is so clearly distressed.”
I stopped pacing. “Please, sir. I need to know this. And then I’ll let you go.”
He began again with shaky breath. “The Seax of Knaves wasn’t a game. It was a ritual. In the region it originated in, “the knave” was a slang term for a demon or devil. An evil spirit. In the ritual, you became a “Knife of Demons” essentially—you were doing wrong against one who had not wronged you. Spreading discord and suffering. Part of the practical effect is clear—it was a slightly clever way of trying to get revenge on others indirectly. But the more profound consequence was supposedly that you were binding yourself to this Other. And whether you knew it or not, you were part of the offering to be made.” The man cleared his throat. “There are stories of this throughout history, of course. Places where people become strange. Turn on each other. Whole villages and towns have been lost to it, even in more modern times. Today we call it mental illness. Mass hysteria. And…well, I’m sure that’s the right of it.” He laughed uncomfortably. “If I may ask, why are you so fascinated by this? You haven’t tried it yourself, have you?”
My vision began to swim as I nodded to an empty room. “We…we did. We thought it was a joke and now my friends are dead and…”
He muttered something, and then said more clearly, “Do not contact me again.”
I heard a beep as he hung up. Staring down at my phone, I replayed in my head what he’d muttered before hanging up, trying to make sense of it.
“It knows what you hate. And it hates what you love.”

The bridge of the Empress Threedak slipped into tense silence on the viewscreen. The Dhajtel settled into their couches, steeling themselves against the g forces as the fleet increased its burn rate. Next to Threedak, Bekai glanced at her worriedly. Threedak kept her gaze on the monitor. Her daughter’s concern and curiosity could wait for another couple of days. For the moment, she refused to split her attention from the cameras watching her and the viewscreen. Even if each breath felt like she was sucking down hot glass, history demanded that she stand tall in this moment.
Almost as one the invader ships began clustering around the moon’s station, powering up their engines and moving periodically so as to prevent Kahtash’s fleet from hitting them with any kinetic shells at extreme range. Theoretically, in space there was nothing to stop a projectile so long as the pull of the nearby gas giant’s gravity was taken into account. That said, compared to lasers, even the fastest kinetic penetrators moved at an absolute crawl. Past a certain range, even the newest whelp could simply track incoming rounds and drift out of the way with a minimal expenditure of reaction mass.
“It looks like they see us girls,” Kahtash’s voice was slightly off pitch as the inertia compressed her into her command couch. “All torchships, please target the enemy station with your main cannons. Arm penetrators and fire one volley at 907 hours precisely. Fire a second volley at 909 hours. We will assess damage after the kinetics hit. At a very minimum we can keep them on their toes. Force them to deploy screens and fighters to protect the station long before we get into range.”
Kahtash flicked out her tongue instinctively, tasting the stale air inside of her helmet. “So far the invaders have deployed fewer screening vessels per torchship than expected and displayed an unwillingness to fire their full complement of rockets. It’s a guess but our analysts think we have the resource advantage. If they are having trouble rearming or refueling, trading slugs for their screen’s reaction mass at range will only increase our chances when we get closer.”
Threedak’s eyes flicked to the command center’s indicators. The meter marking each torchship’s capacitor banks filled, changing from yellow to green. They fired their volley silently, each torchship rocking as the heavy shells traveled the entire length of the vessel only to be flung at incredible speed into the emptiness of space. Two minutes later, the torchships shook once again as the second volley was dumped into space.
The ships didn’t even retract their radiators, dumping the heat from their constantly accelerating drives and heavy cannons as rapidly as possible into the depths of space. Yellow indicators began to fade toward green as the heat sinks returned to their nominal state.
Threedak flicked her tongue, nodding to herself. That was yet another benefit of firing at great range. Without the credible risk of return fire, Kahtash could maintain a measured rate of fire, allowing each torchship enough time to shed heat without resorting to venting finite coolant. Functionally, all the cannonade cost her fleet was the reaction mass needed to power the cannons and an easily replaceable kinetic penetrator.
Although Dennis Billing hadn’t invented the tactic, he had popularized it, allowing human fleets to destroy fixed invader assets at long range before they were driven off by the enemies much larger fleets. He called the strategy ‘defense in depth,’ and relied upon Partisan class light cruisers to destroy invader fuel dumps and supply depots in systems that they had otherwise taken from humanity. Only through the slow buildup of overwhelming force were the invaders able to push Dennis’ forces back, buying humanity months and years worth of time.
Even if the war ultimately was futile, Dennis’ strategy proved itself once again. The station, knowing its fate, deployed almost one hundred drones and opened fire on the fleet. Three heavy kinetic cannons joined almost forty missile tubes, spitting death at the Dhajtel far outside of their range.
Without pause, the navigator on the Empress Threedak rapped her four fingers across the control panel next to her couch. The fleet shifted course slightly, a fraction of a degree in heading more than enough at their range and speed to divert the ships well away from the oncoming fire. That would be the fate of all attacks at extreme range against a moving target. Rockets and kinetic shells wouldn't have the fuel to track Kahtash’s fleet while it adjusted course, rendering them about as useful as firing a crossbow at a fly.
Still, the station kept firing, the torchships surrounding it burning their engines heavily to move toward the Dhajtel fleet now that Kahtash’s strategy was revealed. Threedak thrummed with approval. If the invaders deployed screening vessels to try and shoot down the incoming rockets it would mean that they had the fuel and supplies for a protracted conflict. By abandoning the station, not only did the invaders consign it to its fate, but they tipped whatever passed for hands to their lack of supply.
Minutes passed in silence as the Dhajtel fleet fell into a repetitive pattern. The station would fire a volley of slugs and rockets. Slight adjustments would be made to ensure the projectiles would go far wide of the fleet. Then the process would repeat itself. Only after a couple minutes of fire did the fleet have to make a more substantial burn once the navigator pointed out that the station’s attacks were attempting to box them in. Even then, the solution was simply a minute of burn on a perpendicular course.
The blips on the plot that represented the two volleys of kinetic shells intersected with the marker representing the station. On screen the blurry flashes of heat and radiation that represented the station’s close in defenses flared as it tried to shoot down the penetrators. Ultimately, the effort was largely futile. Kinetic attacks didn’t carry the sensitive electronics, warheads, and rocket fuel that lasers were designed to detonate or disable. Only lucky shots, delivering enough energy to the spinning sides of a slug to divert its course, actually managed to do anything and those were too few to matter.
Where a moving ship might only be hit by a handful of penetrators or a cluster of flechettes, the station crumpled under the fusilade. In the first volley, all eighteen shells were on target and only four were deflected by the station’s last ditch defensive fire. The remaining fourteen punched through the stations’ lightly armored hull, sending searing lances of flame, debris and plasma out the other end as they pierced it cleanly.
Only ten of the slugs from the second volley were on target as their microcomputers frantically tried to adjust their course to match the station which was now spinning as it vented oxygen and twisted slabs of metal. The station didn’t have any further fight in it. Point defense didn’t even try to defend it, instead letting all of the attacking penetrators through.
In a flash of white light, the station’s fusion reactor lost containment and it erased itself from the plot. Around the command center, Dhajtel began cheering. Even Threedak broke into a grin, slapping her graspers onto Bekai and Dahless’ shoulders.
“Look at your sister,” she thrummed proudly. “Kahtash has wet her fangs first, and all without the loss of a single Dhajtel life.”
“There is more battle yet to be fought,” Bekai replied, sighing. “Plenty of time for the invaders to spend Dhajtel lives in a futile defense. Still-”
Bekai paused, leaning forward to take in the multitude of bars and indicators in the corner of the combat plot. “The fleet appears to be operating without any major problems,” she continued, satisfaction in her voice. “I don’t see any evidence of heat or power spikes that would indicate a malfunction. If there are going to be any problems, they haven’t reared their heads yet.”
“There won’t be Bekai,” Threedak smiled warmly at her daughter. “You always fret over your creations, never content with them as they are. It’s what makes you a great inventor, but this anxiety is a strange fit for you. I’m used to seeing the fire of your forges in your eyes when you argue with me.”
“They’re detaching screens,” Dahlass interjected quietly, ending any further banter as both Threedak and Bekai turned back to the plot.
Thirty four green squares, representing the Kithra class screening vessels detached from the Dhajtel fleet. Four from each torchship and ten from the Empress Threedak herself. They surged forward from the fleet, a brilliant stream of green that was quickly joined by a swarm of drones.
The invaders followed suit, but the second their screens detached, Threedak hissed in triumph. The five enemy torchships only managed to field eleven screening vessels and just over half the projected complement of drones. Their analysts had been right. The invaders were isolated, unable to replenish their losses from the previous engagement.
The two walls of screens took up position in front of their respective fleets as the ships drifted into rocket range. Threedak’s graspers tightened on her daughters’ shoulders. This was it. They were seconds away from avenging Captain Laksheer’s martyrdom and striking the first blow against the invaders. They had always been an implacable foe. Their numbers and technology made them a daunting foe, seemingly beyond reach, but today the Dhajtel would sink their teeth into the invaders’ throats. They would show that their foe could bleed.
“Target the enemy torchships and prepare to fire rockets,” Kahtash spoke on screen, her voice clipped and formal. “Focus all fire on one ship at a time. Two volleys per ship. One of them will get away unscathed, but with any luck we’ll completely overwhelm their point defenses and score a kill or two at range.”
On camera, a Dhajtel in a gunner’s couch nodded before hunching forward, frantically plotting the firing solution for the entire fleet. About five seconds later the larger ships fired, one hundred and sixty rockets. Staggered shortly thereafter the screening forces fired as well, adding another one hundred and thirty six to the volley as the clusters of rockets merged together before screaming toward the invaders.
The invaders fired back, their torchships only managing to field one hundred and forty six rockets in each of their six volleys. Given that each invader torchship traditionally carried thirty rocket tubes, that meant that in all likelihood some of the invader ships were still damaged or suffering from some sort of malfunction. Threedak leaned forward, a predatory grin crossing her muzzle. Yet more evidence that the enemy fleet was out of supply and low on resources.
As the facts mounted, Threedak did her best to keep her relief from her face. The Dhajtel needed to see her proud and assured, a monument to their race’s success and confidence. They couldn’t know how worried she had been since the Battle of Gabriel that the invaders had sent a messenger home. Even if her race scored a victory here, they were far from ready to face the juggernaut that was the full invader fleet. What the Dhajtel needed was time. Time to build and grow. Time. She sighed, a hint of sorrow flashing across her face.
Dahlass placed her grasper over Threedaks’ and looked up at her. Threedak turned her head to say something, but the words caught in her throat. Dahlass’ eyes were fixed on her. Emotions flickered through Threedak. Pride in her daughters. They’d accomplished so much so quickly. Anxiety, even if they won this battle the Dhajtel had centuries of warfare before them.
More than anything, she felt love. An alien emotion, introduced by her human memories, but she didn’t have another word for it. Decades of labor and care connected her to both her daughters and her people. She’d tried to take as much of the struggle upon herself as she could. The worries, the late nights and the burden of making the tough choices their society would need to survive.
She saw it all reflected in Dahlass’ face. Her daughter might not speak up much, but she cared. For Threedak and her sisters. For the Dhajtel race as a whole.
Threedak simply smiled back, the expression bittersweet. For all of her efforts to spare her daughters, the one thing they didn’t have was time.

  • Ziggler tells a WWE official that he has someone in mind to face Drew McIntyre tonight and assures them it isn't him.
  • MVP has an official announcement for Apollo Crews from the Hurt Business, he says insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result, so Apollo must be insane for challenging them again and again. MVP says because Cedric lost against Crews last week they sent him to Hurt Business boot camp so he doesn't make any stupid mistakes again. Montel says Apollo tried to step to Lashley twice now and he got dropped both times. Yet he tries to run his head into a wall again and again so tonight he'll get dropped again.
  • During The Hurt Business vs Ricochet, Apollo Crews, and Mustafa Ali, the lights start to flicker, go out, and the Retribution logo appears on the Thunderdome screens.
  • The legends are still playing cards backstage and Ric gets a royal flush.
  • We get a vignette of Bianca Belair proving she's the fastest by beating people on a track, even when giving them a head start or when she has to jump hurtles as well.
  • Drew McIntyre says he won't keep the people waiting and asks who wants to step up to take his challenge. Dolph Ziggler comes out and introduces Drew's challenger, Robert Roode.
  • We see a janitor walking backstage with his face covered and a hood up. He grabs a steel chair from his cart and approaches the legend's lounge and takes off his hood to reveal it's Orton. Orton puts on some night vision goggles and turns out the lights and we hear him swinging away. He turns the lights back on to see the room totally destroyed and the four legends left laying. Orton makes his exit as WWE officials rush into the room.

I am trying to use pandas to export a bunch of data into excel, but for some reason it is saying that "H air outlet uncertainty" is null. It's a bit of a mess but this is the section I am struggling with:
 Headers1 = ['H air inlet uncertainty', 'H air outlet uncertainty', 'H1 uncertainty', 'H2 uncertainty', 'H3 uncertainty', 'H4 uncertainty', 'Q compressor uncertainty'] Headers2 = ['Q evaporator air uncertainty', 'Q evaporator refrigerant uncertainty', 'COP system uncertainty', 'COP refrigerant uncertainty'] indexpd = ['Precision', 'Bias', 'Total'] data1 = {Headers1[0]: [HinP[i], HinB[i]], Headers[1]: [HoutP[i], HoutB[i]], Headers1[2]: [H1P[i], H1B[i]], Headers1[3]: [H2P[i], H2B[i]], Headers1[5]: [H4P[i], H4B[i]], Headers1[6]: [QcompP[i], QcompB[i]]} data2 = {Headers2[0]: [Q_evap_airP[i], Q_evap_airB[i], Q_evap_air_unc[i]], Headers2[1]: [Q_evapP[i], Q_evapB[i], Q_evap_unc[i]], Headers2[2]: [COP_sysP[i], COP_sysB[i], COP_sys_unc[i]], Headers2[3]: [COP_fridgeP[i], COP_fridgeB[i], COP_fridge_unc[i]]} df1 = pd.DataFrame(data1, columns = Headers1, index = [indexpd[0], indexpd[1]]) df2 = pd.DataFrame(data2, columns = Headers, index = indexpd)
I checked and "H air outlet uncertainty" does have a value at this point and from what I can tell the syntax for it matches what the rest of them have so I have no idea what is wrong. Any help is appreciated!
