Light at the end of the tunnel: Mid-Youth Crisis edition

2020.07.13 13:02 ilovetodaydream Light at the end of the tunnel: Mid-Youth Crisis edition

It’s 3 am, I’m sleep deprived, and I’m writing this on my phone. But as Anna Nalick said, “If I get it all down on paper, it’s no longer inside of me, threatening the life it belongs to.” So, here I am, at the tender age of 24, writing about my mid-youth crisis. I graduated with a degree in nursing with zero debt. Instead of working as an RN I’m working at my dad’s cleaning company, making a little above minimum wage. I know that some of my family members are talking behind my back, they think I’m making a mistake. They’re saying how I have taken the life I have for granted. How so many people would love to be in my shoes to have all the opportunities I have had. I can’t deny it, I do feel guilty about what I am doing. And yet, I’m still taking the risk and “throwing” it all away, as I’ve heard some of them say. But they don’t know me. They don’t know what I’ve been through and what I’ve felt. They’ve only ever seen what I have wanted to show them.
I do love nursing. I love everything about it. I love the long shifts, the responsibility that comes with it, helping people, caring for them, connecting with the patients and their families. But it wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I realized why I love it so much. Focusing on other people, caring for them, looking out for them, prioritizing their needs, it’s what I am good at. It’s what I’ve always done. Whenever our family went through a roughy patch my mom would always get hit the hardest. When she was at her lowest, I was her rock. I took care of her. During these times I didn’t have time to worry or think about myself. I was too busy making sure she was ok. I would say that taking care of others and putting their needs before mine turned into a bad habit.
Spending my time and energy on others meant that I didn’t have to think about me. This, along with a bunch of other things, made me get to the point where I didn’t know how to properly express my emotions. I got used to bottling everything up. Whenever I let my guard down and let emotions escape, I didn’t know how to handle them. It was overwhelming. I would shut myself down until I could shove those feelings back into the bottle so I could feel “safe.”
As I said, I do feel a bit guilty about what I’m doing. I have the training and ability to help those in need at a time when the world needs nurses the most. But I can’t do it. I’m afraid that if I do this now, I will feel stuck. I’ll get comfortable with the job, I’ll settle, I won’t see the need to go back to school to pursue the degree that I really want, but what I’m most afraid of is that I’ll start neglecting my emotional needs again. I’ve been “dating” myself for a few years now. I’ve learned a lot about who I am, and I’ve identified the areas that I need to work on. Changing my career is another step in to get me moving in the right direction, to the path I want for myself. Maybe it won’t turn out to be the right decision, maybe people are right and I am making a mistake. Whatever the case, I’m won’t live my life with what-ifs, and it’s time I start thinking about what I need.
